Many people around the world stay trapped in mediocrity because of their own limiting beliefs.
What is a limiting belief?
It’s any thought that makes you feel inferior.
Thoughts like:
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “They don’t like me.”
- “My partner would never allow me to do such a thing.”
At first glance, these thoughts might sound true to you. But if you think carefully, are these thoughts really true? Or did someone make you believe they were true?
If you want to be successful, then you have to conquer your limiting beliefs.
It is non-negotiable.
The simple way to conquer your limiting beliefs is to use Cynthia Kersey’s ABCDE formula.
Cynthia Kersey is a best-selling author known for her book “Unstoppable”. She spent seven years researching and interviewing hundreds of America’s greatest achievers. Cynthia found that all the successful people she interviewed used the same principles to conquer their limiting beliefs.
She sums up the principles to conquer limiting beliefs in her ABCDE formula:
A for Adversity
Also known as the triggering event. Every successful person Cynthia Kersey interviewed had to endure a difficult situation. The event is always the beginning point in every epic story about achieving success, such as the story of Earl Nightingale.
If you are currently in a difficult situation, you have an opportunity. The successful person knows that every adversity is an opportunity in disguise.
B for Believe
How do you view your adversity? Do you see it as an obstacle you can’t overcome? Or do you see it as a spring to launch you into your success?
The beliefs you hold determine how fast or slow you can achieve success. Successful people hold on to beliefs that help them become more courageous and be more confident to take the necessary action.
What do you believe about yourself? If it doesn’t make you feel stronger, then dissolve it.
C for Consequence
If you do nothing to change your beliefs, then you will fall victim to their side effects, also known as unwanted consequences.
Consequences can come either as emotions or behavior. If you don’t change your beliefs, you will either feel inferior or fall into an inferior behavior. Do you really want that?
Most people tolerate stressful conditions – they accept the status quo and would rather be safe than pursue the success they desire.
That is not healthy. If the adversity comes, and you hold on to old limiting beliefs, then the consequences won’t change.
To be successful, you must change the way you act in order to create healthy consequences.
D for Dispute
Sometimes, to believe in yourself you must disagree with everybody else. You need to dispute the negative things other people are saying about you.
If they say you’re not good enough, dispute it and say that you are. If your environment pushes you to think you’ll never create something good for yourself, dispute it by moving to a new environment or make one for yourself.
Before Microsoft, Bill Gates told airport security to be careful with his floppy disks because they were worth tens of thousands of dollars. They laughed at him. He disputed their condescending opinion, and made billions of dollars from the software contained in those “worthless” floppy disks.
By disputing negative beliefs – especially the ones coming from yourself – you will give yourself a boost of confidence and conviction you need to succeed.
E for Energize
This is the final step towards conquering your limiting beliefs. By having conviction in what you want to achieve, you will be energized with a powerful positive force.
This energy is your fuel. The fuel you need to keep believing in yourself. Nothing determines you succeed or fail other than your own beliefs about yourself. Outstanding circumstances may occur, but they are temporary and you are not stuck.
